Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for May 20th - Strawberries!

Market News

Hello!

It is full steam ahead on produce this week! Those strawberries are finally coming in as well! There is such a great selection of vegetables this week it is a feast for the senses.

John’s strawberries have been a little late in getting here, but are big, sweet and delicious. Last week we pieced together berries from 3 different farms, but this week these beautiful berries are all organically grown at John’s farm.

Just in time – Dozen Bakery has listed their scrumptious Brown Sugar Shortcakes – perfect for strawberry shortcake and lots of other things as well!

It is always hard to guess quantity on items like berries – we usually don’t know for sure until we pick them! If they are sold out and you would like to order some, please leave us a note in the comments section of your order and we will try to get you some!

There are a few varieties of herb plants left for your garden, as well as the seasons first cut flower bunches!

Thanks for your support, and we will see you on Wednesday!

Dawson Local Harvest for May 25th

Shrimp, Steak, & More for Memorial Day Weekend!

HI EVERYBODY!

Yes, it’s been a bit of a wait, but finally Georgia wild-caught White Shrimp from TOM’S AWESOME SEAFOOD is available again, straight off the docks at Darien, Ga. And what timing, with Memorial Day Weekend approaching! You might also like some Steaks and Burgers for the grill, and COPPERHEAD HOMESTEAD has got you covered with all-natural pastured Steaks & Ground Beef.

You know what goes great with Steaks & Shrimp? Salads! And LEILANI’S has super-tasty Gourmet Mix and Romaine Lettuces as a base, and spice it up with thin slices of beautiful Scarlet Queen Turnips and Spring Green Onions as well.

And speaking of “Spiced Up”, CULTURED TRADITIONS has added several new items to their line of tasty pickled and fermented foods. Start with Seaweed Sauerkraut! Wow! Also New, Fermented Green Beans & Carrots, Happy Cucumbers, plus Fermented Cherry Tomatoes are back. A neat twist for weekend snacks and hors d’oeuvres.

Market News

School’s done, the fireflies are out, and the temperatures are soaring — summer’s here! The rains have come at just the right time, to knock those temps back a bit and to get that moisture into the ground. The spring leafy greens will soon take their leave from the Athens-area farms, but the ALG growers further up in the mountains will keep us supplied for quite a while yet. Asparagus and strawberries are winding down, but I saw social media posts today showing the first ripe blueberries. The changing of the seasons is such an exciting time, and we’re lucky to have growers spread out enough that we see some overlap in what they have to offer us.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has returned to Saturday mornings at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons at Creature Comforts downtown. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market has returned, and you can catch the details on their website here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running Saturdays from 9 to noon. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Greener Acres Farm:  Rain, Rain, Go Away !!

The Struggle is Real

This gloomy, rainy weather not only lowers our spirits; it makes it very difficult for the farmers to get their crops in the ground. We have been trying to get things in the ground, but Mother Nature is definitely making it a challenge. Let’s say a prayer for some nice sunny, breezy weather to help dry out the fields a bit.

In The Market This Week

Heritage Hills is now carrying Salad Dressings/Marinades again, bottled by Village Eatinghouse. The “Best Dressing Ever.”

As well as their amazing pork products such as Sweet Italian Sausage, Savory Sage Sausage Rope, Kielbassa, and Hot Italian Sausage; and Chicken Legs and Carcasses. Not to mention their free range fresh pastured Eggs.

They also have Beeswax Wraps (a natural alternative to plastic wraps), Cherry Smoked Himalayan Grinder Salt, Colloidal Silver, Live and Active Scoby (for making Kombucha Tea), Skeeter Beater (All natural bug repellent), and Tick Off Tick Repellent.

They carry more than 10 artisan cheeses, including the return of their Pirate Blue and Honduran Harvest.

And don’t forget their awesome and nutritious Raw Milk.
