Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest - Make A Salad, Plant Some Plants!

Market News

Hello!

Happy Earth Day! We appreciate all you do to make our food system more sustainable. In buying local organic food, you are doing good not only for your body, but for the planet as well. It is a small step, but it means a lot to us small farmers and business owners.

Our vegetable offerings are very low due to
A colder winter and the wet and cold spring. We hope the temperatures continue to rise and encourage the veggies to grow faster! So get what veggies you can, and stock up on the meat and eggs offered – along with some Dozen Bakery bread you have many delicious meals!

We have a wonderful selection of herb and vegetable plants, as surely you are all as anxious for spring to get started as we are! We have a great variety of heirloom tomato plants this year, all organically grown with lots of TLC by our friend Tana Comer at Eaton Creek Organics. These are no big box store plant starts – these are high quality, thriving plants that are sure to bring you much delicious eating this summer!

What better way to celebrate the Earth than buying some plants and getting your hands in the dirt! If you have any questions about something in particular please let us know!

This week we plan on being on the grass down at the parking lot. We are really thankful to Trinity Presbyterian Church for allowing us to set up on their property, going on 10 years now! We are ever appreciative of their support.

We really look forward to seeing you!

Thanks for your support, and we will see you on Wednesday!

John and Tally

Recipes

Roasted Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi is great raw in a salad, but it’s also really satisfying cooked in this hearty way!

Ingredients
4 kohlrabi bulbs, peeled
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 clove garlic, minced

salt and pepper to taste
1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Directions
Preheat an oven to 450 degrees F
Cut the kohlrabi into 1/4 inch thick slices, then cut each of the slices in half. Combine olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Toss kohlrabi slices in the olive oil mixture to coat. Spread kohlrabi in a single layer on a baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven until browned, 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally in order to brown evenly. Remove from oven and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Return to the oven to allow the Parmesan cheese to brown, about 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

CLG:  Opening Bell: Green Onions, Salad Mix, Kale, Cheese!

Good afternoon!
Many gardens are off to a slow start this season because of the two late frosts we had. Looks like all of that is behind us now so it’s safe to plant your tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, etc. At Cedar rock Ridge, our vegetable garden is 90% planted. We hope to get the last peppers and tomatoes in the ground tomorrow. The garlic has begun to form bulbs, and we are on track for a nice harvest in early June.

Consider adding coneflowers to your garden this year. I currently have over 100 plants in five colors growing: cream, yellow, orange, red, and purple. Save a spot in your garden for some of these hardy, perennial flowers. And birds love the seeds! As you plan your garden, please remember to bring back your plant containers and pots to the market. We will reuse them.

Thanks to Mable at Everette Brown Farm for bringing Spinach for the extras table on Friday. :-)

I heard the word “zucchini” from two Growers this week. If the weather warms up a little, it won’t be long…

Fresh-roasted and ground Coffee available now!

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Over 630 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

Even though it’s a bit of a nuisance getting in and out of my car during the rain, I am happy that it’s pouring down. Yesterday was busy with transplanting tomatoes and peppers into the garden spot at our house. And the houseplants that have already been moved outdoors were treated with new soil. So the rain is nourishing them all this afternoon.

How are you spending this rainy day? Believe it or not, we have a soccer game scheduled and are waiting on word whether it will be played. Soccer players are hearty folks. Generally if the fields aren’t standing in water, and there is no lightning and thunder, soccer games go on. I guess I’ll wear my rubber boots!

We are supposed to have rainy weather through Wednesday, so bring your umbrellas when you come to get your orders. We’ll see you then.

Thanks,

Beverly
