“RURAL RESOURCES”

Rural Resources Farm is on a former tobacco farm where we now practice sustainable methods to ensure this land for future generations of farmers. We practice organic farming methods, and only use antibiotics as needed and prescribed by the vet. We are a local non-profit connecting farms, food, and families through educational experiences. One of those educational experiences is our Farm and Food Teen Training Program that works with at-risk low income youth from around the county that have food security issues to help improve their food choices and availability. We do this through an intensive 4 year program where teens progress through different levels of food production. In year 1 the teens learn garden and livestock managements with the opportunity of having a home garden. The second year, the teens work with local chefs to learn how to cook fresh food in a healthy manner and use different kitchen equipment from standard home equipment to commercial. During the year, teens also cater meals in the community to reinforce skills they have learned and pick up some job skills. The 3rd and 4th year our teens learn about business development, planning, and implementation. Through this program, pigs have become the teens main livestock learning opportunity.

Heritage hogs are becoming very popular to grow on pastures again as farmers begin to think more about sustainable practices. *Rural Resources Farm and Food Teen Training Program *have been raising a heritage hog, hereford, over the past 10 years. The teens have been producing a few each year for meat production and have begun selling the meat to help cover expenses. The pastured pork program has allowed at-risk low income teens to learn about animal husbandry and business practices. They have spent time learning about rotational grazing practices and the use of cover crops to feed our little herd. The hogs have allowed the teens a hand on experience on farming and food security. Beyond this learning, the teens have learned responsibility, life skills, communication skills, business planning and implementation, and customer service. This project allows us many opportunities to support our mission of connecting farms, food, and families. Beyond just raising the pork for sale, a few piglets in the stock each year are gifted to teens for them to raise for meat to help support their families’ food needs. Purchasing our pork is supporting not only a local farm, but a mission that is making an impact in our community to help educate youth about their food and to impact those who are food insecure.

Two more weeks until we move outdoors! Hope you are watching Facebook and Instagram for our Faces of the Farmers Market campaign. I’ve shared the press release we sent out below. It’s going to be a great year!

Opening day will feature our first Kids Day for the season with free activities from 9 am to noon. Dragonfly
Studios will be with us offering amazing face painting services. Willi Carlisle, a local musician, will be playing
music from 10 am to noon. Your favorite farmers and vendors are returning and there will be a few new
vendors for you to meet and welcome to our market family!
Those who receive SNAP/EBT benefits may purchase tokens at the market to use to purchase eggs, meat,
produce and baked goods all season. The market also participates in a Double Dollar program that provides
funds to match SNAP/EBT and Senior Voucher purchases.
“We’re partnering again this year with the Benton County Master Gardeners and the Siloam Springs Museum
to host second Saturday Kids Days April through September, as well as planning a calendar of events with
special programs most Saturdays,” explained market manager Stacy Hester. “The Power of Produce returns
this season providing a fun opportunity for children to engage in the local food system through conversations
directly with farmers, educational games and demonstrations, and exposure to new fruits and vegetables. In
addition to participating in educational activities, POP Club kids receive vouchers to spend at the market,
allowing them to make their own shopping decisions at the market. We will have live music, monthly cooking
demonstrations and more. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for programming updates and
watch for a preview of our farmers, makers, and bakers in our Faces of the Farmers Market campaign”.

Foothills Market:  The Market is Open - April 2


It’s the nature of gardening in early spring – you get an early crop of something and then have to wait while the plants produce a second set to harvest. That’s happened to us on Foothills Market – after a couple of weeks with a variety of fresh greens and carrots, our available offerings of vegetables are reduced to mainly collard greens.

However, we still have a great variety of locally-grown and produced meats, ranging from standards like ground beef to fresh cuts of pork chops and steaks. We also have local lamb; if you’ve never tried lamb meatballs, this would be a good chance!

Shop the market, fill your cart, then click the “Place your order” button. We’ll have your order ready for pickup from 4-6 Friday afternoon at the Food for Thought garden.

Market News

The weather this weekend was absolutely beautiful. Just perfect for getting outside and enjoying a day at the park, or walking through the neighborhood, or working out in the garden. You might think, what with the daytime temps nearly hitting 80 degrees and the traditional farmers markets all opening up again that it’s the perfect time to put those tomato seedlings you picked up at market or the plant sale into the garden. It is prime gardening season, but hold off on those summer plants just a little bit longer! We’re going to have a night down in the 30s this week. That’s enough to severely damage those summer veggies, most of which are tropical plants that can’t handle even the slightest bit of cold. For tomatoes, I’d recommend hold off until the nights are reliably in the 50s for optimal growth. You can start them sooner and they’ll survive nights in the 40s, but it doesn’t do them any good at all and generally stunts them for the rest of the year.

I know when you see those gorgeous plants listed at ALG and elsewhere the urge is strong to go home and put them right into the ground when the weather is like it was today. I have to fight that urge off every year, too, and I’ve had a garden going most every year of my life. Go ahead and buy them and get to know them, but keep them in the pots and bring them inside at night for just a little while longer. They’ll thank you later.

The Athens Farmers Market has returned to Saturday mornings at Bishop Park, and the Wednesday market will open next week. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is closed for the season, and you can watch for their return on April 28 on their website here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running Saturdays from 9 to noon. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. The Oconee County Farmers Market is still closed for the season, but will return soon. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

1. 2 cups Kales, half a pineapple, and a cup of coconut water. 2. A cup Kale, a small banana, 1/2 cup greek yogurt, a little milk, cinnamon, and vanilla. 3. Add fresh Strawberries / raspberries to Kale, with greek yogurt, milk, and vanilla protein powder. And 4. for something different try Kale, avocado, pineaooke, and a touch of ginger. Great taste that will wake you up!

Hello!

Happy Easter! We hope everyone enjoyed a peaceful day with friends or family, and the little bit of sun!

We are still on hold and will not be delivering this week.

We are looking forward to strawberries coming in, and they should be ready towards the end of April! We will also by then have a nice selection of spring veggies for you.

We will have herb plants for sale for your garden – basil of different varieties, thyme, oregano, and more! Also tomato plants!

We know it is disappointing to have to visit the vegetable aisle of a grocery store, but please know we will be back soon!

We are looking forward to a great season ahead, and are so thankful to you all to supporting us!
