This is Jennifer Adams’ last week as the milk runner for The Wednesday Market. Thanks to her volunteerism, many of our customers have had access to farm fresh milk, cream, eggs, ground beef, honey, cheese and other products from The Good Shepherd Farm. Jennifer is stepping down to pursue other opportunities. Thank you, Jennifer, for being part of our team, and we wish you all the best on your new endeavors.

Fortunately for all of our milk customers, Betty Dean has stepped forward to assume the duties of milk runner. And, for those of you who may not already know, Betty is my mother and my right hand helper at Concord Street Sweets. Having grown up on a farm herself, Mama is passionate about providing others access to fresh, wholesome products. Please take the time to thank Jennifer and Betty for their time and service to The Wednesday Market.

Some of you may have noticed that Twigg Hollow Farms is absent from the Market lately. Sandra Hayes is having surgery Feb. 16 and due to her health concerns, her activities are limited. She reports that Twigg Hollow may be back to the Market with vegetables in late April or early May. Sandi, we send love and peace and wishes for a speedy recovery!

We also send special greetings to Sharon Fox of Fox Hollow Farms who has been away from us for several weeks now. Sharon, we love you and miss you and hope that you are feeling better and will come back soon!

Concord Streets Sweets is absent from the Market this week, but will be back next week. We just have a little bit of catering to do.

Hang on to your hats, y’all, as the weather people say we’re about to get a third round of severe weather coming through this afternoon and this evening. Then, hopefully, this crazy Georgia weather will settle down some.

Nelson Dairy was established in Urbana, Ohio in 1988. The farm has been in constant operation since that time. However, that is not the beginning of the family farm. Chris Nelson has been in the dairy industry his entire life following in his father’s footsteps. The family farm is currently in its fourth generation with hopes that the fifth generation will stay involved in the dairy industry, only time will tell. In the fall of 2015, Chris and Joyce made the difficult decision to down-size their herd due to the tumultuous industry. Keeping the family farm profitable has been a struggle for many local farmers inside the dairy industry and agriculture in general.
With some imagination and the desire to develop a niche market of their own, The Dugan Road Creamery was born. The creamery will begin production in late spring 2017. The initial offerings will include fluid cream line milk (with gallon and half gallon quantities available) and yogurt (with quantities still being determined).
So, what exactly is cream-line milk? It is pasteurized, just like milk at your local grocery store, but the biggest difference is that the milk is not homogenized. Homogenization is the process after pasteurization where the milk is mixed and the cream line (or fat content) is permanently mixed into the body of the milk. This high-pressure process breaks down the fat molecules so that they can dissolve into the milk, preventing separation. It has been hypothesized that this process can also reduce some of the health benefits of milk consumption. Dugan Road Creamery products will be made with a minimal amount of processing (pasteurization-only) resulting in milk as close to nature as possible.
We look forward to providing more information on both the humans and cows behind our product in future blogs. We hope to show our customers that we provide quality dairy products while upholding the strictest standards of animal welfare, land eco-sustainability, and product quality. We welcome any comments, questions, and visitors to the farm as we begin this new adventure. Thank you for helping to bring our family farm from conventional to sustainable.

Bok Choi Rejoins The Market

HI EVERYONE

January is plugging along, and we’ll soon start to see a few more winter veggies. First to make a reappearance, Bok Choi. Wondering what to do with it? Well, it’s an excellent easy stir-fry side dish, literally just a little oil, a couple cloves of garlic, Bok Choi cut into bite-sized pieces, stir-fry and done! I like to add grated ginger, red pepper flakes, and a little sesame oil and soy sauce to taste. You can also “beef it up” with a little steak, pork, or chicken. In the Vegetable section along with Kale, Collards, Turnips, and Green Onions.

I want to take a moment to thank our gracious host, L & L Contractors for setting aside time and space in their office home to allow market pickup! Frontier Family Farm is providing some amazing Brussels Sprouts, spinach and lettuces to get us through the winter produce needs. We have used the spinach in soups and fritters! YUM!

Farrar Farms has you covered in the beef department with steaks, chorizo and bones for your stock pot! A 5th generation farm in Lynchburg: “We allow our cattle to grow up naturally without the use of any artificial growth hormones, steroids, or other additives. In addition to leisurely grazing the beautiful pasture on the rolling hills of Farrar Farm, our cattle also get an additional (and, at least if you’re a cow, delicious) supplement feed of spent mash from the local distilleries. The outcome is tastier, more tender beef, happier and healthier cows, and a better environment.”

Benjamin’s Organic Sprouts is Back with the alfalfa, broccoli and zesty mix! All great for sandwiches and salads or just popped into your mouth for a delicious snack.

Wild Flours will be off for 2 weeks and then back the second week of February! They will be with us every other week so be sure to stock up.

Flying S Farms and Double Star Bar Farms also have incredible breads!

Want to try Botanical Harmony Farm soap but not commit to the large bar? Try the sale cuts (which actually we have run out of so are cutting perfect bars in half because the cuts are so popular!). They are $2.50 a cut and we choose the scent. What a deal! \Organic, all-natural AND affordable.

This weather is gearing thoughts towards gardens and flowers!! Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has a few lovely hanging baskets and house plants to keep your fingers green until time to dig deep in the soil!

Don’t forget that we can deliver to your door! Select delivery and add to your cart just as you would any product check that your address is correct in the system, set a cooler out and we will deliver during the normal pickup hours on Wednesday.

NEWS AND NOTES

Several of our growers have new things in the works this winter. Amy Rae of Solace Farms sends this note:
We have added a few more cuts of our grassfed Scottish Highland beef – some sirloin steaks, round roasts, and have lowered the price of our ground beef and added a value-pack 5 lb listing. Also, this week only, we’re taking $2 off T-bone packages! We need to make some room for the next steer we are getting processed, so there may be more specials coming soon.
We are sold out of lamb chops and ground lamb, but still have plenty of ribs and roasts for those wonderful winter slow-cooked meals!
I’ve also added several new soaps – a Sandalwood & Cedar that comes in a wild animal shape, and a Ginger, Lime & Lavender goat milk line as well. There are also some new listings for small-bar multi-packs if you want to sample several different soaps and fragrances, and lastly I’ve added a smaller version of my ever-popular alpaca-wrapped felted soap, in the same natural or hand-dyed colors. Try one out this week!

Hello Folks,
It is that time of year !! Macks’ Mushrooms is staying busy cutting new mushroom logs and inoculating them. Macks’ will be adding at least 200 logs into production which means more beautiful shiitakes !! Macks’ also has plenty of dehydrated shiitake available that keep great on shelf for later use

We will only have our value added products till farming season. Eggs, Sour dough breads and rolls, bar cookies, cakes, and jams. Will have Tart Cherry and Almost Seedless Blackberry jams added this week, may add more depends what all I get made Monday. Working on a yeast roll not sour dough recipe to make dinner rolls and/or cinnamon rolls…fine tuning my recipe.


We will be glad to deliver your order to you, at home or a location of your choice, on Friday afternoons for a small fee. Order delivery just like any other product.

If you prefer to utilize this service, please place an order for it, same as other products, selecting your delivery area.
