Grilled Escarole

Give escarole a try this week! It is a delicious, versatile green in the chicory family, good for cooking, soups, and salads! Here is a delicious and easy way to have some fun with it. Plus, the heads are really large so this recipe works great!

INGREDIENTS
1 head escarole, outer leaves removed and saved, thoroughly washed
Extra-virgin olive oil
Coarse salt
1/2 cup pitted, crushed green olives

PREPARATION
Get your grill going to a medium heat.
Shake the escarole dry. Cut it lengthwise straight through the core into 4 wedges. Drizzle each wedge with plenty of olive oil, about 1 1/2 tablespoons per wedge, and season aggressively with salt. Grill the wedges, turning only once, until wilted and charred in spots, about 10 minutes altogether.
Transfer the escarole to a serving platter, give it a healthy drizzle of olive oil, and scatter the olives over the top. Serve immediately.

Market News

Hello!

This week switches to daylight savings time! And although it is a bit strange, as the weather is still so lovely, it means we will be moving our deliveries up under the porch at Trinity Church. The main reason is that it is a well lit area, and as it will now be getting dark about 5:00, we appreciate the light filled space! Much thanks to Trinity Church for allowing us to do this over the years. Without their support we could not do what we do! So, on Wednesday don’t think we have gone on vacation. Continue your drive up the hill and you will see us under the porch as the drive veers to the left.

Peanuts! We’ve got them! And they are organically grown right here in Middle Tennessee – what a special treat! Did you know that peanuts are among the most carcinogenic and pesticide-contaminated of any snack we commonly eat, due to heavy applications of chemicals in conventional growing practices. These peanuts are cured but not roasted. That is up for you to decide if you prefer that taste or not! Perhaps you’d like to make your own healthy peanut butter!

The Bloomy Rind is back with us this week! Yahoo! Make sure you check out the fabulous selection of cheese!

Also, we will have available at pick up Thanksgiving pre-order menus from Dozen Bakery. They are offering pies, breads, and salads for you to pre-order and pick up before the holiday.

Bear Creek Farm has on Special their lamb and tenderloin for you folks who want to order a meat other than turkey for Thanksgiving!

There is a new product up – dried herbal tea from herbs grown on Tally’s Turnbull Creek Farm.

Thank you so much for all your support!
See you Wednesday!
John and Tallahassee

Market News

THANKSGIVING week (ONLY) we will have delivery and pickup on TUESDAY, November 22, 2016. Same place and time… just switching to Tuesday.

Lovely, strange-weather days! I will take this and enjoy beautiful nights with friends and family. We have been using our local produce in a variety of quick soups so we can stay on-the-go. If you are short of time,

Chef Jenny with Seeds of Success offers her Dill-icious potato soup (along with other incredible soups/snacks. The potato soup is a hearty and “dill-icious” blend of yellow and red potatoes, locally grown garlic, homemade cashew cream, and SOS Dillicious. It is a quick and convenient comfort food to enjoy from a bowl. Defrost, heat and eat.

Rocky Glade Farm has added a few “newish” things to the market…Starbor Kale is back and hakurei turnips make a return. Also time to start thinking about Thanksgiving and that means sweet potatoes. We have Carolina Ruby, purple skin, bright orange flesh, great all purpose for casseroles, baking etc. Also, Covington is popular with bronze skin and orange flesh, again, great for all applications. We have them available by the pound, 5 pound bag or by the half bushel. Half bushel of course being the best deal of the day for all the sweet potato fans out there!

Flying S Farms has added Rosa Bianca Heirloom Eggplant- Lovely and delicious Italian heirloom: ideal for slicing, baking and roasting. Rosy-lavender with white shading, the fruits of this beautiful Italian heirloom small type 3/4-1 pound. With a mild, non-bitter flavor, the fruits’ robust shape is ideal for slicing, baking or roasting.
They have also added frozen blackberries,a tart cherry jam, and shallots to their amazing market offerings.

Sweet Pea is new this year and we love the offerings they bring. Bamboo stakes, FRESH CUT herbs, tomatillas that have been a salsa staple at my house for weeks now and delicious peppers.
Linda will be set up with her handiwork this week to get a jump start for cold-weather and holiday shopping.

West Wind Farms and Wedge Oak are taking holiday turkey reservations and have different size options available. You place the order, pay the deposit with your normal pickup and that is subtracted from your total when the turkey arrives! FRESH and local for the holidays!

Rainbow Hill has several varieties of apples! Don’t miss your chance to have these incredible, local, in-season apples while they last! Carol said that she thinks/hopes they will hold until Thanksgiving so there are a few more weeks!

As always, we thank L & L Contractors for their hospitality and generosity in hosting our market! Please remember them in your contracting needs! They support us so please return the support to them!

See you Wednesday!

Tracey & Ashleigh

There are only 2 Friday markets before Thanksgiving! We will NOT have a market the Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov 25th. Be sure to get all your holiday favorites before they sell out. Good news! Most of you can remember when we had that wonderful local cheese from Honeysuckle Lane Cheese. Well, they’re back in business, and Jerry from Bluebird Hill Berry Farm has their cheeses listed. Great for your holiday cheese tray!

More good news! We’ve had several requests for a steady supply of DUCK EGGS! I hope to announce a new Grower from Wooster who has a big flock of ducks next week. There will be a few dozen available on the EXTRAS table this Friday. Stay tuned!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

Check out over 575 wonderful items listed right now. See you on Friday!

Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table. And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

Avalon Farms is Back!

This and That

Have you been outside today? Drought aside, the weather is MARVELOUS! We’ve had a busy day. A nice family from Marianna brought their son up to meet our dogs this morning. There’s a lady training four legged critters under the big pecan tree by the barn. So far the Mr. and I have got about 1000 of 3000 strawberry plugs in the ground. It’s a good day to be a farmer!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our Market vendors and I are having fun planning and plotting our Christmas Open House this year. It will be Thursday, December 1, 3pm to 7pm in sync with Dothan Nursery’s annual Christmas Open House. This is always a fun and festive event. The Nursery provides refreshments and our farmers will have grills going with samples of all sorts of wonderful foods. This year we are inviting a few outside vendors whose food related products are guaranteed to make Open House THE place for wholesome sustainable foods and gifts.

I am beyond excited to announce AVALON FARMS IS BACK!!!!!! Those of you who have been with the Market a long time will remember Wendy and her delicious vegetables. Be sure to read her blurb in the Vendor section.

Thank you to everyone who continues to give to the Haiti Relief Fund. Kirsty and Mackenzie, the couple spearheading the assistance to the farmers co-op in Petit Trou, are still in Haiti. Electronic communication is still out of the question from there but we hope to get a report after they return next week.
