DeForest, WI:  Availability for the week of October 9

Fall is finally here—Forest Run Farm was visited Sunday morning by a little frost. There should still be peppers, and let us know if you want beans. We won’t know for another day or so if they survived.
Please remember that the market will be open through the end of October and at least the first Friday of November. If you have a Farm Stand CSA, the cards are only good this season.

Note This week, and until the end of the season, the Market hours are 3-5pm. Please show up during market hours so you are able to add to your order.

Miami County Locally Grown:  The market closes tonight at 8pm!

Less than 4 hours to get your orders in for the week! Thank you for your support, and Happy Shopping!!

ALFN Local Food Club:  Weblog Entry

What a beautiful Sunday morning!

The market is open and waiting for your orders. Sorry you did not receive this as an email right at 12 – the market has been open for ordering but this message only posted as a weblog, and not as an email! I apologize for that. Hope everyone was able to get on and start ordering despite the confusion.

This time of the year seems to make me hungrier than usual – is it the weather? My inability to turn down anything that includes “pumpkin spice” in the title? Whatever it is, lately I have found myself drawn to dishes with savory flavors and warm Fall notes. This week I’m craving a hearty beef stew, apple pie, and sauteed kale with pecans and cranberries – lucky for me, I can buy almost all the ingredients I need on our market! We’re so fortunate to have a large network of growers who provide a variety of local produce to suit our tastes.

Speaking of variety, we made another order of dry goods! We have organic flour, beans, quinoa, and more. Make sure you order some and stock up! Don’t forget that we will not be having market on October 22nd due to the Race for The Cure.

Finally, for anyone interested in learning how to ferment their own food, the Southern Center for Agroecology is hosting a wonderful workshop series at Christ Episcopal Church (led by our own Angela Gardner). The next one will teach participants how to make cucumber kimchi, and is on October 22nd from 6-8. You can sign up here and get more information about the series.

Now excuse me while I go make a steak and egg omelette. I wonder how a pumpkin spice blend would taste on it….

Dawson Local Harvest for Oct. 14th

Don’t Give Up the Ghost!

EVERYBODY!

Lots of news for the Market this week.
First, What’s New in Produce. If you like hot’n’spicy, you’ll love Ghost Peppers from LEILANI’S. Twice as hot as the Scotch Bonnet, these red Bad Boys can add some heat to any meal! An order is enough to try with several dishes. Also new to the Market this week are cool-weather favorites Kale and Collards, joining Green Beans, Bok Choi, Chard, Salad Turnips, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Okra, every kind of leaf Lettuce imaginable, and other Peppers. All of these veggies ebb and flow through the seasons and several are coming to an end, so it behooves any of you interested in what’s available now to take advantage of availabilities while you can.

In other news: MY DAILY BREAD has added Organic Apple Butter to their delicious line of Jams & Jellies. If you’ve never tried their Apple Butter or Hot Pepper Peach, you don’t know what you’re missing (see Processed Foods: Jams & Jellies). They also mill their own Organic Flour for their Baked Goods and have added Freshly-milled Red Wheat Flour to their product line (see Grains & Milled).

Other Items of Note include Free-range Pork Chops from 5 HENS, Organic Pumpkin Roll and Organic Pumpkin Spice Bread from DAILY BREAD, Heirloom Cooking Pumpkins if you want to do it yourself from BRADLEY’s, along with their Local Wildflower Honey, and much more. Take a look to see what’s on the Market this week.

Market News

Greetings everyone! We hope this note finds you well and you have a wonderful week!

Jim and Julie from Rocky Glade Farm are BACK this week and we are extremely excited to welcome them! They have a few things on offer and will bring more as the season changes. Check their website for CSA possibilities!

Krafty Kupboard brings some INCREDIBLE Concord Grape Jam: made from Concord grapes just in from California. Exceptionally low in sugar, this dense, smooth fruit spread is fantastic on toast, biscuits, oatmeal, yogurt and in recipes. Full of flavor and antioxidants, this grape jam is quite a treat! (I know because she shared some with me and it IS a treat!!)

Linda with Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has added two types of seasonal table decorations, baskets and planters, both with colorful fall plants to brighten your home well past Thanksgiving. Also we’ve added four colors of Ornamental Kale, which can be planted out in your garden for color which will last till the very coldest part of the winter. These are much longer-lasting than mums, and a bit more unusual. But they are in limited supply, so get them soon! The weather is also perfect for planting perennials in the garden, allowing them to establish strong root systems before winter, to produce spectacular blooms next spring.

I know my herb beds are looking better because of her efforts in the greenhouse!!

Seeds of Success brings the Quinoa Corn Chowder and Carrot Ginger Soups, just in time for the chilly days!

Benjamin’s Organic Sprouts have been well received and you guys have supported him so well! We are adding them to the market today along with broccoli sprouts and more varieties to come! THANK YOU for supporting our youth in their efforts!

There’s abundance on our market right now! We hope you will take the time to browse some new things this week (or even old favorites you’ve been meaning to try).

Rainbow Hill has several varieties of apples! Don’t miss your chance to have these incredible, local, in-season apples while they last!

Plenty of amazing summer vegetables still available along with all your packaged and convenient foods, skin care and more for your week’s grocery needs!

As always, we thank L & L Contractors for their hospitality and generosity in hosting our market! Please remember them in your contracting needs! They support us so please return the support to them!

See you Wednesday!

Tracey & Ashleigh
