Happy Monday, little local market of love customers!!

Today, I bring you information about this year’s October State Of The Plate!

Make plans to attend this year’s, State of the Plate, at the beautiful farm of Wren Farm in Mechanicsburg! State of the Plate allows us to honor or local growers and producers, and also, it allows us to showcase various farms and barn settings, as we travel the county, with a new venue!

This year, we are keeping the reservations to just 120 people!! Tickets are 25.00/each!! You will get to shop from, and have a tasting of products from our local vendors!! You get an amazing, local lunch that will be co-catered by In Good Taste Catering/Amy Forrest, and by Hippie and the Farmer/Pam Bowshier and Mark Runyan. There will be speakers that have much to share about the local scene explosion, this past year!! You get coffees from our own local coffee roaster, Hemisphere’s Coffee!! You get the chance to see the beautiful Wren Farm, and you get the chance to support your local foods council, local foods movement, and your local growers and producers.

Reservations can be made by calling the Champaign County Chamber!! They do need to have you make your reservations, as soon as you can, so that we do not run out of room!

Thanks so much!

Market News

It doesn’t exactly feel like it yet, but there are signs that summer is winding down. Sure, the equinox this last week is the official start of Fall, but the weather hasn’t gotten the memo yet. But the nights are longer than the days, and the plants pick up on that really quick. Take the arugula, for example — there are six different listings for that zesty green. It might have some heat of it’s own, but it’s not fond of summer at all. Right on it’s tail we’ll see bountiful spinach, cabbages, broccoli again, and other cool season crops. The summer items will hold on as long as they can — we’ve still got over a months until frost will but an end to those. So, for the next few weeks we’ll get to enjoy the best of both seasons! It’s exciting times in the kitchen, for sure.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Purple HUll Peas and Sausage Dinner

Try this with some of our sausage and a salad for a full Fresh Harvest dinner!

1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
4 cups fresh purple hull peas
1 quart chicken broth
12 to 16 ounces spicy andouille-style sausage or similar spicy smoked sausage
salt and pepper, to taste

In a medium skillet or sauté pan, sauté the onion and garlic in the oil until softened. Transfer the vegetables to a medium saucepan; add peas and chicken broth. Cover and simmer over low heat for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, slice the sausage and brown in the skillet. Add to the peas, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes longer, or until peas are tender.
Uncover and increase heat to medium (a low boil); continue cooking for about 3 to 5 minutes to reduce slightly.

Add salt and pepper, as needed.
Serve with cornbread.
