Dothan, Alabama:  Market at Dothan - June 5, 2016

Dothan’s SUSTAINABLE Market is now Open

This and That

Have you ever wished you had saved a recipe, a web link or information you saw in one of our weekly newsletters? Have no fear! They are recorded in the marketatdothan.locallygrown.net website. Simply click on “Weblog” and scroll down till you find what you are looking for.

Don’t miss this week’s recipe. We have three vendors offering fresh blueberries!

With summer upon us, high temperatures are also here to stay. This is the reason you may have noticed multiple coolers when you pick you your market order. While we would LOVE to be able to have every fresh picked item in a cooler, it is just not possible. So we’re asking that you come as early as as you can to pick up your orders for the remainder of summer. Heat is only a friend of fresh picked produce when you’re cooking it.

Lastly, an ANNOUNCEMENT – Meet your Farmer is back! Next week Jennifer from Sandspur Farms (and samples, and extra products for purchase!) will be with us during Market hours. Even if you don’t order come out – meet Jennifer, try some of her stuff and experience the genuine DIFFERENCE in sustainable food!

Farm to Table Recipes

NO BAKE BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE PIE
This has been a Horton family most requested summer favorite for many years. The original recipe made 1 pie and used 1 cup of blueberries, but we found that by adding a massive quantity of blueberries we could make two pies that were even better than the original recipe. Plump sweet blueberries work best. It is easy to make, travels well and is gobbled up quickly.

Ingredients
1-2 frozen pie shells
1 can evaporated condensed milk
¼ cup lemon juice
1 8 oz package cream cheese at room temperature
Dash of Salt
2-8 cups clean fresh blueberries
Whipped Topping for Garnish

1. Bake the pie shells according to package directions and cool.
2. Mix evaporated milk and cream cheese. Add lemon juice and salt
3. Fold blueberries into mixture. Spoon into pie shells, cover with plastic wrap and chill.
4. Add whipped topping to one pie before serving.
5. Hide the second pie for yourself because there won’t be any left.

Gwinnett Locally Grown:  Market is OPEN!

The Market is now OPEN until Monday at noon!! Click here to order now!

Hope everyone had a fantastic Memorial Day weekend, and a great week so far. I have been very busy around the farm, trying to finalize this summer’s garden. I have noticed some of you have gotten seedlings from The Veggie Patch, I love gardening and would love to hear about all the exciting things going on your backyards/gardens. So please feel free to share, I’m always looking to learn and exchange information!

This week has been all about chickens for me, we have some new baby chickens at the farm and it got me thinking about pastured Vs conventionally raised poultry. The USDA has so many labels such as “free range”, “free roaming”, organic… it can get pretty confusing. Bill, our “chicken guy” does a combination of pasture and supplements with a non-GMO feed. His “girls” (as he refers to them) live in portable tractors out in the field and are moved to fresh pastures every day. The combination of pasture and feed leads to a diverse fat profile, higher Omega-3 content and reduced saturated fat/overall fat; not to mention they taste better. Chicken is one of the most versatile ingredients you can have in your freezer, not to mention a good and healthy source of protein. Head over to the market and check out Bill’s inventory!

ALSO AVAILABLE

  • Raw Cow's Milk
  • Raw Goat Milk
  • Pastured, free range chicken eggs
  • Pastured, free range duck eggs
  • Pork
  • Organic Vegetables
  • Local honey

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments, as well as any feedback on how we can better serve you. I am available Monday-Thursday 11am-4pm. grow@ranchoalegrefarm.com or 770-339-3065 ext 5

The Market is open Thursday at 9am – Monday at noon. After Monday at noon, ordering is disabled until Thursday morning. Pick up your order Tuesday from 4-7pm only at Rancho Alegre Farm at 2225 Givens Road, Dacula, GA 30019. New to The Market? Learn about how it works here

The Cumming Harvest - Closed:  This Week at The Cumming Harvest

THIS WEEK

We’re starting to see more summer veggies coming in this week. Look for Beans, Beets, Squash, Zucchini and even some Cherry Tomatoes online.

Did you know that all of our veggie farmers are within only 30 miles from Cumming? Cane Creek Farm, MJ Fruit & Veg, Weedy Soil Farm are all in Cumming. Heirloom Gardens grows from Dahlonega and Leilani’s Produce is grown in Dawsonville. We are very lucky to have these passionate growers so close to us and all growing sustainably. Support local farmers by making a point to purchase from growers that actually grow the food they sell.

Eggs We have a limited supply of eggs this week. Please limit your orders to no more than 4 doz per family.

Watsonia Farms has listed yellow clingstone peaches online. These are certified organic peaches, so they will need to be consumed or preserved within the first 3 days of pick up. Clingstone’s will be available through the end of June. Freestones are available from end of June through the end of August.
