Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Feb 21 2015

We’re going to head back to Huron County this weekend to finish the Holistic Management course at MeetingPlace Organic Farm, and apparently, another storm is on the way. May be more rain than snow though.

My inquiry about chicken broth got a couple of replies, so we’ve gone ahead and started producing the first few batches. Cami adds our organic onions, carrots and seasonings. I’ll include it in the market offerings. There is the simmered chicken meat from the carcass as well, good for making quick meals, stir fry, soups and chicken pot pie. It will be frozen in baggies.

Greens are holding well in the greenhouse, with the first new crop of arugula now able to harvest. Also purple potatoes in the rootcellar and duck, chicken and goose eggs (good to eat and keep the shells for painting Easter Eggs).

Says Peter Mundy, originally published by Sustainable Food Trust (Feb 19, 2016), "We face huge challenges in feeding the world sustainably. But one thing is certain: grazing ruminant livestock – and the high-quality food they produce – can and should play a key role… The quest for sustainable food production is highly complex and there will be no one-size-fits-all solution. Indeed, the necessary solutions will inevitably be highly complex, multi-faceted and site-specific: it comes down not simply to what you eat, but fundamentally how it is farmed. Read more here and here
So, in light of this important public discussion, the special this week is Hamburger, 10% off.

Healthy eating

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Reminder

Good Morning ALFN Members,

Remember to finalize your order from the market before 12:00 today when I need to send all orders out to our growers.

Rattle’s Garden is back in egg production. Tara of Rattle’s notes, "Last week it was like a switch flipped in the chicken coop and the laying hens turned on! Lots of color! Varying shades of blue, green and pink along with the start of dark brown eggs being laid by our new Cuckoo Marans this year. Please enjoy our wonderful fresh eggs produced by our flock of pastured laying hens that rotate through our veggie fields in the winter and range on our hayfield during the summer. We think you will find them delightful. Check out our “mobile chicken coop:”http://www.rattlesgarden.com/2013/09/mobile-chicken-coop.html

This Saturday is Community Market Day; we will have folks available to discuss the possible new chicken regulations in the city as well as discuss breed varieties. There may even be a few guest poultry there to express their fowl opinion of new regulations:)

We have two slots open to volunteer this Saturday. It’s always good to have new volunteers from our membership. If you haven’t volunteered, give it a try and earn some ALFN market credit! Sign up here: Volunteer Spot

Thanks!

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

Seeds have been ordered, wood chopped for the greenhouse wood stove, and greenhouse has been cleaned and readied. we are getting excited to plant. Our greenhouse is new and so we are heading into new territory here, hoping that we can keep the seedlings warm at night. As new farmers I find that I often am just giving it a try and hoping that it (whatever the newest idea is) works. The daily challenges are what I love about farming. There is always something new to learn. This time of year we are focusing our learning on seeding, growing, and nourishing our plants. Our goal is to give them a great start so that they can be healthy for your bodies somewhere in the future.
I look forward to seeing you on Friday,
Angela

Market News

I don’t have a lot of new information for the newsletter tonight. It’s been a really beautiful last few days though, and that’s had me itching to get into the garden and get to work. I’m lucky that there is a community garden in the apartment complex where I live, practically right outside my door, so I have take my basket of hand tools and get right to it. Even though I don’t have my own vegetable market farm any more, I still grow the same things I did then — unusual heirloom varieties from around the world. My favorite source for seeds is Sow True Seed, just of the road from us in Asheville, NC. But my favorite source for live plants is right here at Athens Locally Grown. Right now there are 40 listings for live plants on the market, and you can expect that to climb into the hundreds as gardening season get into full swing. I can’t wait to be taking flats home with me on Thursday nights and getting them into the garden on the weekends.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the winter. You can watch for news during the offseason on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is continuing, weather permitting, on Saturday mornings from 10am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm on Friday evening for their plans. The other area markets are also all closed for the season, I believe. If you know of any winter markets operating, please let me know. And they might all be closed, but we’ll be here all year round!

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
