ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Reminder

Remember to get your order finalized in the market before Wednesday at noon!

The cold snap with overcast skies have me hankering for nutmeg, cloves, gourds and cider. We have some beautiful, fresh products in the market right now. Make sure you check out the featured selection for new entries.

Testimony to Freshness

Can I get a witness? Here’s one. My second grader loves peeled, raw turnips. However, he tells me they only taste good when they are freshly pulled out of the ground. His description of a raw turnip included adjectives such as “juicy” and “sweet.”

From coffee roasted on Thursday, to root crops with the aura of their humus home, ALFN has a market of growers with fresh ingredients. They are meant to be eaten now.

Be Fresh,

Champaign, OH:  Cosmic Shop Tour!

Good evening, little local market of love customers!!

As you know, we very often promote our farm tours of our vendors, special offers, special events.

Now, it’s your market manager’s turn to host a tour. In my shop. Right in downtown Urbana!

In case you didn’t know, I have my Cosmic shop right in the square, on Scioto Street. This weekend, is the downtown’s annual Holiday Open House. This means that the downtown will have extended shopping days, holiday fun in each shop, the eateries will all be open, late, and most every business will also be open on Sunday!

And, let me stop, here, to give a bit of background, and, or a day in the life of your market manager.

I am the owner/baker of Cosmic Charlie Bread. I have entered into my 7th season as Cosmic Charlie. Along with this business, I rock another business which is named, Girl With Far Away Eyes. This is my fashion side of things that offers a mix of vintage, retro, and hippie inspired clothing. I have had my clothing shop for over 5 years. I got my start as a little pop up fashion shop, all around downtown Urbana.

In the midst of building both of my businesses, I became involved in downtown activities which led to my seat on the board of Monument Square District. In the beginning, I was a board member, then I stepped up to the executive secretary position.

My term with that position came to an end but I remain on the board. I am now a co-chairperson of Art Affair On The Square, chairperson of Santa Land/Santa’s Homecoming, promotions coordinator for Holiday Open House, AND, I serve as one of the chairs of the Christmas Gala. I am in charge of the cocktails and bar part of that evening’s event.

And, you already know me as your market manager, here, but I also am the market manager of the Mechanicsburg Farmers and Artisans market, and serve as a member on the Local Foods Council. I also bake breads for area restaurants such as The Depot Coffeehouse, Café Paradiso, Mad River Farm Market, and Seasons Bistro and Grille, in downtown Springfield.

I am a full season vendor at the Springfield Farmer’s Market, and the first Cosmic shop was housed in downtown Springfield.

Now that you have that background, I am happy to announce that I am finally getting around to having a ribbon cutting/open house/grand tour/First Friday Coffee Hour of my shop. The Cosmic Breads and Threads shop where I house both of my businesses!!

The fun begins at 7:30am, Friday, November 6th, for the coffee hour. Then, join me, for my ribbon cutting of the Cosmic tie-dye ribbon at 9am!! After that, it will be an entire weekend of fun as we kick off the downtown Holiday Open House!!

In the Cosmic shop, you will also find products from other local vendors, from this market, such as Oakview Farm Meats, Swisher Hill Herbs, ELM Tree Essentials, Valley View Woodlands, Champaign Berry Farm, Honey Boy Honey, JC Growers and Bad Seed Mustard!!

Food will be available from local meat producer, Oakview Farm Meats, in conjunction with Cosmic Charlie!

There will be shopping, cocktails, vintage and hippie clothing, a live performance by Jamie Karg as he brings his guitar, and music, Friday evening, and surprise models…you will need to look to see if you can find them…

It’s going to be real good time, it’s the biggest shopping event of the season, right downtown, in your own hometown!

I invite all you to come out, come to the ribbon cutting, or come at some point, during the weekend…

I urge you to make the scene…

And, with that, I remind you that there is just a little over an hour left to order from the market, tonight. I will close it all down at 10pm…go, order, get your weekly shopping done.

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
Cosmic Pam

Martin's Farmstand:  Sweet Carrots

The late carrots that we are harvesting now are sweet and good- better than the earlier carrot crop was. There is a lot of them. We pack them into 25 lb bags. To store carrots and red beets you want them to stay moist and as cold as you can without freezing them. I am separating the #2 carrots into bags with nice but small carrots and other bags that have the forked or crooked etc carrots. These are both priced at $12.50 per bag and are an especially good deal for juicing etc. We also have lots of #1 carrots.($25 bag) They have the same great taste with less cleanup time and waste. We hope to finish the carrot harvest tommorrow and then I will be turning attention towards the rest of the beets- there are a lot of them and it is likely that we will have them available all the way till spring.
Wednesday, November 18 will be the last day of normal summer hours for this year so make sure you are stocked up for thanksgiving needs by then. After that we want to have two full weeks to be completely off duty and then in early December winter hours will start. Winter hours are informal- we give service when we are available but it is best to call or e-mail before coming if you want to be sure not to waste a trip. With the new display cooler we will be able to give you give much better service in the winter because the goodies can all be nicely displayed. Daniel
