Market News

Right on cue, Athens might get our first frost tonight. Earlier in the day, the forecast predicted a dive into the upper 20s tonight, but just now I see it’s been bumped up to a balmy 33. Should the frost escape us, the rest of the week is looking very mild, and just what the fall veggies love. I looked back at my notes from this time last year, and see we were pushing daytime highs near 90 and we were begging for rain. I’d rather keep what we’ve got now, thank you very much.

I’ve had a few people ask me about Tink’s Beef, wondering when we’d see her again. I’m happy to report she’s back with her full range of products for you this week. A number of you have been asking also about Doug and his salmon, and I’ve not yet heard when he’s returning. In years past it’s been about this time of year when he rolls back into town with his latest catch, and I’m hoping to hear from him soon.

Something else I’m excited to see return is the Old Timey Seed Swap. This is the 20th anniversary of the event, where gardeners get together to trade seeds, sample from others’ excess, share stories of successes and setbacks, and just have a nice time. There will be workshops, demonstrations, and music as well. IT’s being held the morning of November 11 at the State Botanical Gardens, and I’m already excited about it. You can find out more information here: mailchi.mp/c190ce839c8f/20th-annual-old-timey-seed-swap

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours now on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
