Greener Acres Farm:  Market Open for Delivery November 3rd

Crazy Week!!

Things have been a little crazy around here but will soon be settling down. On that note, we will still be delivering on Friday as usual, but will be making our deliveries in the evening. Cathie will be attending “Food Safety Modernization Act – Produce Grower Certification Training” on Friday from 8am-5pm, so deliveries will begin after 6pm. Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer a Saturday delivery as we will be hosting a farm visit to Green"er" Acres Farm as part of the Veteran Farm Trail. Of course, if you want to make a visit to the farm on Saturday, we can have your items available there. Please make sure you let us know where you want your orders delivered.

Available this week:

Rispoli’s Produce has new this week baby kale and collard greens, as well as sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, candy onions, blue potatoes, and farm fresh brown eggs.

Jamboree Farm has Bulls Blood beets and brown eggs.

Heritage Hills Farm has new this week SOUPS: Avgolemeno and Chicken Tortilla; new meat items to include: Sweet Italian Sausage, Savory Sage Sausage, Maple Sausage Links, Kielbassa and Hot Italian Sausage; as well as chicken wings, legs, thighs, boneless breasts, pork chops, brown eggs, and their homemade deodorant.

AND as usual, Bake Shop Bakes carries delicious apple dumplings and Chocolate Chunk Peanut Butter Brownies, Cherry Hill Farm carries marvelous goat’s milk soap, Clover Creek Cheese Cellar carries raw milk and 12 varieties of artisan cheeses, Golden Farms Malting carries Certified Organic Spelt and Buckwheat flour, Green"er" Acres Farm carries sweet and hot peppers, candy onions, elephant garlic, kale, swiss chard, rosemary and honey; and Vale Wood Farms carries a full line of dairy products.

Market News

Right on cue, Athens might get our first frost tonight. Earlier in the day, the forecast predicted a dive into the upper 20s tonight, but just now I see it’s been bumped up to a balmy 33. Should the frost escape us, the rest of the week is looking very mild, and just what the fall veggies love. I looked back at my notes from this time last year, and see we were pushing daytime highs near 90 and we were begging for rain. I’d rather keep what we’ve got now, thank you very much.

I’ve had a few people ask me about Tink’s Beef, wondering when we’d see her again. I’m happy to report she’s back with her full range of products for you this week. A number of you have been asking also about Doug and his salmon, and I’ve not yet heard when he’s returning. In years past it’s been about this time of year when he rolls back into town with his latest catch, and I’m hoping to hear from him soon.

Something else I’m excited to see return is the Old Timey Seed Swap. This is the 20th anniversary of the event, where gardeners get together to trade seeds, sample from others’ excess, share stories of successes and setbacks, and just have a nice time. There will be workshops, demonstrations, and music as well. IT’s being held the morning of November 11 at the State Botanical Gardens, and I’m already excited about it. You can find out more information here: mailchi.mp/c190ce839c8f/20th-annual-old-timey-seed-swap

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours now on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Dawson Local Harvest:  Have You Ever Noticed?

Dawson Local Harvest for Nov. 3rd

Have You Ever Noticed?

HI EVERYBODY!

Have You Ever Noticed some of the more “esoteric” products in The Market? For instance, did you know DAILY BREAD has great treats not only for Humans but also for dogs? Check it out, under Pet Supplies you’ll find excellent Dog Treats like Cheeseburger, Peanut Butter, and Pumpkin Pie. How cool is that?!

Something else that has been on The Market since we started is LILLIAN’S Sweet Hawaiian Sauce. A 103-year old recipe from Hawaii that is great as a glaze on pork roasts, chicken, and hams, marinade for steaks and chicken, or add a tablespoon to ground beef to flavor Hamburgers. It is wonderfully distinctive and so versatile!

Don’t forget, Sweet Potatoes and Green Tomatoes are part of the Vegetables available for you this week. It’s getting cold, so don’t miss out on fresh Veggies. Get Them While You Can!

THE MARKET IS NOW OPEN!

REMEMBER! You can now order until Tuesday night at 9 pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 6 pm.

You’ll find the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST at http://dawsonville.locallygrown.net

It’s the last week of October and we are gearing up for Thanksgiving! This year we will be delivering Thanksgiving week on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving! We will be delivering to Trinity Church on Tuesday, November 21st from 4-6 pm. (Same time and location, different day!).
We will send out the email and open the Market on Sunday evening per usual, but will be closing the Market on Monday evening – a quick turn around! But hopefully this will allow you to stock up on lots of delicious local food for feeding friends and family, and to have a truly local Thanksgiving !

Dozen Bakery has their pies up for pre- order. You can purchase a pie now to be picked up on Tuesday, November 21st.

There will be no delivery to Westhaven or to Drury Family Farm in Thompson Station that week as they will be on vacation.
