Champaign, OH:  Long Monday

Gonna be a long Monday
Sittin’ all alone on a mountain by a river that has no end
Gonna be a long Monday
Stuck like the tick of a clock that’s come unwound again
(Long Monday-John Prine)

This song, all of John Prine, love him…and, who else has found this day to be long, never ending, dreary, and just a no motivation day?

Yes, even your market manager has a bit of the Monday blues. So much so that I have now given up, poured a glass of wine, put dinner in the oven, and put on one of the most comforting voices I know…John Prine.

I’m getting ready to sit and sip and place my market order. Who’s with me?? What else do you have going on, this rainy night?

This little local market of love has so much to offer, and it’s just waiting for you to place your weekly orders.

It’s a long Monday but at least we can all hang out, pass the time, here, at the market.

I’ll be watching for you…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Siloam Springs, AR:  Online Market is Open!

Good afternoon! It is certainly windy today. Our trash is picked up on Monday and I just happened to get home as my empty trash can was blowing down the street!

We’ve got farm fresh eggs, pastured pork and poultry, grass fed beef, honey, baked goods, crocheted items, and personal care items. R Family Farm is re-stocking pork this week and will have some hams online that they had traditionally cured this time around.

Anxiously awaiting the return of vegetables…See you Saturday!

New Field Farm's Online Market:  The season has begun

Greetings,

Despite the freezing temperatures and damaging winds the first seeds of the season have sprouted. These are tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, which will all be grown in the greenhouse. Onions and leeks will be sown in flats in the greenhouse mid-month, followed by carrots being seeded in the ground in the unheated greenhouse on the Spring Equinox. Off we go!

That fierce wind caused some minor damage to the greenhouses, as well as knocking out power and bringing down trees that blocked a couple of roads here in town. Hopefully, that’s enough weather drama for awhile. We have all we need of that politically these days.

I’ll be sending out emails regarding the next CSA share payment to those who still have a balance due.

Thank you all for payments already made.

Greener Acres Farm:  March is National Nutrition Month

Happy Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month. A month that the National Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics has set aside to educate Americans about healthy eating and healthy living. You can find the fact sheet “17 Health Tips for 2017” at their website http://www.eatright.org/resources/national-nutrition-month

We at Green"er" Acres Farm and our partner growers feel that the best and easiest way to eat healthy is to buy and use as much of our groceries as possible from local, trustworthy growers.

Although it is still cold out there and produce is not in abundance in our area at this time of year, there are still healthy dietary options available locally.

In our marketplace, we currently have grassfed beef, home-raised pork, free-range brown eggs, local raw honey, dried herbs and more. Produce will be added as it becomes available, so check back often.

Market News

This week our town takes a collective pause, what with pretty much all of the schools in town at all levels taking spring break. I know many of you are leaving town for the week, and I hope you have a grand time! Even though break is early this year, the warm weather has our growers working overtime, and they’ve got plenty of items listed for you folks staying behind.

It also looks like it’ll be a gorgeous week, weather-wise, with actual Spring-like (not Summer) temperatures and scattered bits of rain. I smanaged to spend just a little bit of time in the garden this weekend, and I’m hoping to do some more this week, pulling out the winter weeds and putting seeds and seedlings down in their place. I’ve had gardens large and small pretty much every year of my adult life, and this time of year I want to spend every moment out in them. I’ve got a new garden space this year, tended in seasons past by the previous residents of this house, and I’m looking to make my mark on them too. It feels just as good with a few raised beds as when I had a full acre under cultivation.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the season. They’ll return in April, and you can catch the news on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 10am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours from 1-4. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
