Market News

Winter officially starts this week, and so the days will start getting longer once again. There are plenty of other holidays these next few weeks, of course, and Athens Locally Grown will remain open through all of them. Some of our growers are taking time off to slow down and recharge, but we’ll be here for those who have food to offer you, and we’ll be here with our regular hours for you to get it from them. Those of you who are travelling for holidays, safe travels and we’ll see you when you return!

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers and artisans, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the season. They’ll return in April, and you can catch the news on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours from 1-4. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Recipes

Ginger Noodle Soup with Asian Greens
from Naturallyella.com

This is a great soup for winter colds, and is delicious with tatsoi or our Chinese cabbage
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 bunch scallions
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger
2 cups vegetable broth
2 cups water
1 head tatsoi or chinese cabbage
4 ounces ramen noodles (see note)
Salt, if desired
Sesame Seeds, for topping
Red Pepper Flakes, for topping
INSTRUCTIONS
In a stock pot, heat olive oil over medium-low heat. Trim the ends off the scallions and chop up the light green stem. Save the dark green tops for topping. Next, add the scallions to the pot with the garlic and ginger. Cook, stirring occasionally for 2 to 3 minutes until the garlic and ginger is fragrant.
Pour in the vegetable broth and water. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 5 minutes.
While broth is simmering, cut the end off the head of greens. Cut off the stems and then cut the stems into thin strips. Roll the leaves together and also cut into strips.
Add the stems to the broth and cook for 5 minutes or until stems are starting to be tender. Follow with the leaves and cook for another 5 minutes more. Finally, stir in the ramen and simmer soup until the noodles and greens are tender, 4 to 6 minutes. Taste and add salt as needed.
Divide soup into two bowls. Then top with chopped scallion greens, sesame seeds, and red pepper flakes

Market News

Hello!

Winter has sure arrived with fury! We’ve had much wind, sleet and brutally cold temperatures. Our crops have been snuggled in tight in our hoohouses and so far have survived. Tonight’s temperature is the lowest yet so we are keeping our fingers crossed!

This is the last week of deliveries until the New Year! We will NOT be delivering on Wednesday, December 28th. We plan on returning January 4th, but that week will be weather dependent. We will let you know, of course!! For now, please stock up on frozen items, dry goods, veggies and eggs for the coming weeks!

We have lots of items for your holiday needs! Your special meals can include lots of local meats and produce. We also have some nice ideas for gift giving!

We have Gift Certificates available! Get a friend started with Fresh Harvest, or support someone you know is already using our service. The Bloomy Rind has an amazing selection of cheese up, so consider giving the gift of cheese! Or put together your own cheese plate for entertaining. Other stocking stuffer gift ideas we have are honey, Bongo Java organic coffee, and Dozen Bakery cookies!

We are so grateful to all of our customers for the support through the seasons. Thank you for all the love you have shared with us this year. We are really looking forward to 2017!! We wish all of you a very Happy Holiday season. May it be rich with family and warm with laughter and good food! May Peace and Good Will to All prevail in 2017.

Thank you so much for all your support!
See you Wednesday!
John and Tallahassee

Market News

PLEASE NOTE————-We will be CLOSED the week of December 28 with no ordering. -—————————————

Good morning and we hope you are all warm and safe after last night’s severe storms.

We have many new items listed this week from Valentine Family Farm: seasonings to herbal remedies!

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has a light pink and a red Christmas cactus listed. These are GORGEOUS plants to have or to gift! My mother gave me some several years ago and they continue to provide much needed winter cheer with their right-on-time for Christmas showy blossoms! I have even forced a second bloom by repotting!

White City Produce & Greenhouse will be with us this week.

Ann E May’s Gluten Free Goodies has listed several new items this week and will have a table set up for tasting! EVEN if you aren’t “gluten free” these baked goods are wonderful treats!

As I type this and try to think of all the wonderful items to mention on the market… I think of ALL our vendors because everything is wonderful!!

Nature’s Wealth added popcorn that has been grown “on the mountain” for over 30 years! It is small-grained, tender, and hulless. It is DELICIOUS!!!

we have jams, jellies, tempeh, meat of all kinds, milk, yogurt, eggs, baked goods, soaps, and so so much more to choose from!

If you don’t usually take time to browse for a new staple item, please do.. we probably have it!

Always wanted to help someone understand that eating naturally raised, produced or locally made foods/skin care has many benefits? Give them a market gift card, stock their fridge, pantry, freezer and bathroom with a basket of goods from a variety of growers/makers! Who wouldn’t love that gift? It gives to the community by supporting the vendors of the market (then they are able to provide for their families) and gives a wealth of knowledge through experiencing!

All done shopping :D

We will have vendors set up until Christmas each week. This week is Ann E Mays Gluten Free Goodies , Botanical Harmony Farm and possibly several others! We hope you will take an extra moment to browse their products and get to know the people behind the order buttons and photos!

Have a wonderful week!

See you Wednesday!

Tracey & Ashleigh
