NEWS AND NOTES

This Thursday will be our “Jam and Jelly Tasting Event” from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Taste an assortment of jams and jellies made by several local farmers. The same flavors will be available for sale at the tables. Jams and Jellies by Weaver Farms, Flying S Farms, and Sand Dragon Farm will be available for tasting and sales.

Solace Farm, Frontier Family Farms, Botanical Harmony, and Dogwood Valley Greenhouse will also set up tables at market time (weather permitting). You will be able to see and purchase some of their giftable goodies! You will want to invite your family and friends to visit and experience our market this week. Be sure to join us on Thursday, to hang out for a few minutes and chat with all our friendly farmers!

Don’t forget to order your Christmas Kissing Balls and Centerpieces from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. These items will be available right up till Christmas, but you will enjoy them longer if you order soon. Kissing Balls displayed outside will last for a full month. This is the first year I’ve done Centerpieces, so I don’t have experience with how long they will stay fresh. But since they are in water, they should last several weeks on display in the home.

Kountry Vittles Baked Goods has added several scrumptious items to the Bakery section, just two of which are pictured below.

Flying S Farms has lots of holiday jams this week. I’ve also added stacked cakes, both frosted and naked!

From Amy Rae of Solace Farm:
We’re having a year-end sale on garlic – buy one get one free! With this cold snap coming, I need to move the remaining garlic indoors, but once I do it will start sprouting. It is still great quality for the next 2-3 weeks or so, and if stored in a cool DRY place (a kitchen, not my basement!) it will keep for a number of weeks after that, I just don’t have the space for proper storage. The cloves are just starting to swell a bit, preparing for root production, so they are amazingly easy to peel! There’s still plenty of Music, Siberian and Elephant garlic left, so for every 1/4 lb order you place I’ll add a free one (add a note if you don’t want the extra, but if you like garlic I suggest you try doubling it in recipes and see how easy it is to use lots of garlic!). These are all big, beautiful heads – a lot is seed quality, I just wasn’t able to get it planted this year. The Elephant in particular is just gorgeous, my best crop ever. This is the perfect time to make a big batch of roasted garlic, chutney, or pickled garlic. I usually peel and roast up 5 lbs or so at a time (toss with olive oil and bake in a covered pan for an hour or until soft), then purée it in the food processor and freeze in jars, or freeze the roasted cloves whole. Get a few pounds (it would take only 20-30 minutes to peel several pounds of the Elephant!) and enjoy roasted garlic for the next several months – we use it on sandwiches, in salad dressings, pasta, soups, hummus – be creative!

Don’t forget to check what’s included this week in the Produce Boxes from Frontier Family Farm. The contents do vary from week to week, so be sure to fill your frig with all the yummy veggies (and occasionally other items) from a produce box.

Andra from Sow’s Ear Piggery has added Pork Chops, Round Steaks, Shoulder Steaks, and a whole ham to her list of pork products.

Vegetables from White City Produce & Greenhouses will be available this week and next.

We will be glad to deliver your order to you, at home or a location of your choice, on Friday afternoons for a small fee. Order delivery just like any other product.

(L to R) Blueberry Cobbler and Chocolate Turtle Cheesecake from Kountry Vittles Baked Goods, Christmas Centerpiece from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse, Fresh Cut Cilantro from White City Produce & Greenhouses, two types of garlic from Solace Farm.

IMPORTANT ORDERING AND PICKUP INFORMATION

Thanks so much for your support of Manchester Locally Grown Market, and your friends and neighbors who have grown and produced these items. Please encourage our local farmers by helping to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know. We offer a great variety of local farm products, and our items will be in your hands in time to plan for the weekend. Wonderful local products are available for ordering from the comfort of your own computer.

More new farmers are considering joining our market, if they can expect enough sales to help pay their transportation costs. Please help us grow the market by sharing this e-mail with your friends and inviting them to give us a try. And if you haven’t ordered from Manchester Locally Grown for a while, please check out our wide variety of offerings this week. Also please let us know if we can improve our selection or scheduling in any way to better suit your needs.

Blessings,
Linda

Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!

Miami County Locally Grown:  Weblog Entry

I was asked, “What’s the big deal about buying local?”

$1 spent locally will be spent 6-15 additional times before leaving the community –
What a powerful impact we all could make!

On the other hand, spend $1 at a national chain store and 80% leaves the community instantly -
What better reason to support and enjoy our local businesses and producers?

Have your Christmas lists, grocery lists and shopping lists ready…
we’re open until 8pm Sunday, and depend on your support!

Statesboro Market2Go:  The market is open!
