The market is open (we’re a bit late this week) and ready to take orders for Wednesday pick-up!

Tullahoma Locally Grown:  Your Market is OPEN - September 6

Good evening.

YOUR MARKET IS CURRENTLY OPEN.
Now is a great time to order meat for your weekend cookouts and other items you need for the week. You can order eggs, milk, vegetables, herbs, meat, freshly roasted coffee, flowers, and more.

Remember when we announced that Thanksgiving Turkeys are available for pre-order from Fountain Springs Farm? Well, there is a limited amount available, so the sooner you place your order, the better. You will find “Turkey Deposit” listed in the Meat/Turkey category. Be sure to indicate your desired weight between 14-22 lbs when you place your order.

In November, you will receive a turkey close to the weight you requested and pay the balance based on $3.75 per pound. This is a whole turkey with giblets. Do not worry, we will send reminders closer to November so you do not buy a frozen turkey.

Your local market closes at noon on Wednesday. Order now before your favorite items run out.

Thank you for your support. Have a great day,

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm,week of Sept 4 2016

Roma tomatoes on special for canning by the half bushel.
Lots of choice in greens, root veggies, fruit veggies, time to start thinking about freezing some organic goodness for the winter months. As of Sept 4th , we can offer the following crops: swiss chard, beet root, beet tops, green onions, leek, rhubarb, kale, arugula, tomatoes including cherry, beefsteak and roma, carrots, string beans (yellow, green and purple varieties), potatoes (cobbler, dakota and purple), garlic, and herbs: chives dill, spearmint, bronze fennel and lovage.

Day length is now a tad under 13 hrs of daylight we approach the autumn azumith. Chickens know what that is, cuz they start cutting back on laying eggs. We moved the pasture flock to the barn this weekend for that reason.

From Environment Hamilton fb page:
Without bees, we wouldn’t have tomatoes, grapes, blueberries, cranberries, cocoa, vanilla, tamarind, eggplant, sesame, raspberries, rosehips, pears, currants, pomegranates, almonds, peaches, guava, plums, cherries, apricots, avocados, beans, alfalfa, mangos, apples, sunflowers, cotton, soybeans, strawberries, figs, lemons, limes, carrots, squash, cucumbers, melons, hazelnuts, coffee, coconuts, tangerines, turnips, canola, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, canola, cashews, onions, celery, kiwis, and many more, even apart from the fact that we celebrate biodiversity in all its forms and feel every creature has a right to exist even if we weren’t dependant on it. We also know we are far from the only people that feel some urgent attention is needed to support and protect our pollinators.

That’s why we’re creating a “pollinator corridor” of native plants that will provide food and shelter for pollinators across the city of Hamilton, Ontario. We’d like to thank everyone who’s already contributing, and encourage others to learn more about how we can help support local pollinators.

Why not volunteer to help out?

Reminder about natural cheesemaking workshop Nov 12- 13, sat and sunday. Cost will be around $100. Learn from David Asher, Black Sheep Cheesemaking School, how to make many kinds of cheese with no special cultures, just natural fermentation and aging. We’re bringing David to Old 99 so you can learn firsthand. Pls give me a nod if you’re interested, two nods if you’re in for sure. Will take payment now at the store or online.

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

Happy Labor Day-
I hope everyone is home relaxing. We here on the farm are laboring! Putting in watering timers, planting fall crops, and trying to get things a little more organized here on the farm. It is amazing how many things my Hannah did here on the farm- I mean, I knew she was doing work, but missed the intricacies that she provided. Now that all three kiddos are in school, I am aware of just how much she did. It is the little things, like watering everyday. It seems like I should be able to attack that without a problem, but totally missed that it takes hours each day with fertilizing and timing all the different areas. She has been home this weekend brainstorming with me just what we can do to make this farm run smoothly now that I am the only one really running it. Wow- that sounded weird to say! We started our farm as a family, but as the kiddos move forward in their lives, I MUST figure this out. Ultimately it is my dream to farm and they just came along for the ride.
Again, I hope you are enjoying your Labor Day. See you on Thursday,
Angela

Market News

Happy Labor Day, everyone! I’ve known many hard working laborers in my day, but probably none that work harder than our farmers. Please send a few extra thanks their way next time you’re able.

I don’t have anything specific for the newsletter this week, so I’ll let you get right into ordering. Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and Wednesdays from 11am-2pm in the atrium at St. Mary’s Hospital. They have a website too. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running from 9-1. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Dawson Local Harvest:  Harvest News for September

Dawson Local Harvest for Sept. 9th

Harvest News for September

HI EVERYONE!

Here’s some of what you can expect at The Market this September. In Produce news, MY DAILY BREAD has Asian Long Beans available again. LEILANI’S continues to have Okra, beautiful Squash, all sorts of Zucchinis, including various Roundball as well as yellow Zucchini, which looks like your regular green variety except it’s yellow and somewhat better for cooking and casseroles than the green. Also lots of different Eggplants and Peppers.

Elsewhere, FIVE HENS FARMS says they have lots of free-range Eggs, so even if the quantity available says 0 order anyway, and they should be able to handle it. If you have any problems, email me. And you’re really missing something if you’ve never had free-range Eggs. I promise you you’ll never eat store-bought again.

Finally, this little piggy went to The Market, though unfortunately it was by way of the processor. Bad for little piggy, good for all of us who love fresh Sausage, Ham, Pork, and other regrettably delicious all-natural meat. Look for it to show up on The Market soon.

THE MARKET IS NOW OPEN!

REMEMBER! You can now order until Tuesday night at 9pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 7pm.

You’ll find the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST at http://dawsonville.locallygrown.net

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible! We guarantee your satisfaction with all products in the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST.
