ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market Is Open

Good Day ALFN Members,

The market and bursting with everything from swiss chard to compost for your own gardens. If you are like me, this warm weather is making me feel like I’m behind in my garden plans!!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

This weekend is the Little Rock marathon, and this year, the kids’ race course will go right by Christ Church. The race begins at 11:00. Consequently, parking lots will be full and downtown will be crowded. We will still have market on Saturday, but I have a couple of survival suggestions.

  • If you want to avoid the chaos, simply pick up your order on Monday between 5:00-6:00
  • On Saturday, make every effort to come and pick up right at 10:00. Parking will be a bear, so don’t expect to find space in the Christ Church lot.
  • I have linked the race route so you can decide how to get to the church. It will be best to either come into downtown via I-30 exit. Use the course map to plan your own route.

We will need a bit more help on Saturday to make sure we are ready for the early rush. Consequently, I have added on extra slot for a volunteer. If you can help, please sign up here: Volunteer Spot

NEW CHICKEN ORDINANCE IN LITTLE ROCK

On Saturday, we had some urban chickens and their managers join us to promote a discussion about the new proposed chicken ordinance for Little Rock. There has been concern among some chicken owners that the new regulations will further constrict the number of citizens who can keep chickens. First, here are the pertinent new regulations:

  • No more than 12 chickens allowed in the city.
  • Chicken pens are required and must meet certain space requirements: 100 sq ft for the first bird, plus 25 sq ft for each additional bird. (With 12 birds, the total required pen space would be 374 sq ft)
  • Chicken pens must be 25 feet away from neighbors.
  • Roosters must be kept 1000 feet away from neighbors.

Many chicken owners see this as a constriction of present regulations. The square footage requirement along will disallow some residents to have chickens…many yards aren’t that big. There is still time for the public to weigh in and voice their approval or disapproval. Here is the timeline for legalizing the new proposals:

  • Animal Services Advisory Board meets next month to vote to send to city board.
  • City Manager puts proposal on Board of Directors Agenda
  • City Board will vote at the second meeting regarding the regulations to make law or vote no.

If you are interested in voicing a concern, begin by contacting the city officials or attending the meeting on March 16th. Here are pertinent emails and dates:

  • Animal Services Advisory Board (Tracy Roark—troark@littlerock.org; and see other members on website: http://www.littlerock.org/CityCommissions/?ID=7)
  • City Board (board@littlerock.org)
  • Attend the meetings (Animal board meets March 16 at 6:30 at the Animal Village)

Take care,

Siloam Springs, AR:  Online Market is Open! Check Out the Sales!

www.siloamsprings.locally grown.net

Check out the great selection of pastured meats available. R Family Farm is offering Chicken Livers and Gizzards for 1\2 price!

There are lots of baby goats being born at White River Creamery. That means there will be Chevre available again this spring! If you are craving some artisan cheese try the Haloumi or the marinated fetas currently available. The feta is good on pizza or crumbled on top of some fresh Opossum Hollow greens. The Haloumi can be fried and I like eating it with the beef snack sticks offered by R Family Farm.

Our market offers a nice variety of baked goods. Try some Ciabatta Bread from The Bread Basket. I like to slice it in half and, toast it under the broiler or in a cast iron skillet, and fill it with pastured grilled chicken breast and bacon, spinach, and real mayo and provolone or grated sharp cheddar cheese.
I like to add fresh, sliced tomatoes in season and may soon try adding some pesto in place of mayo.

I’ve also been enjoying farm fresh eggs scrambled with onions and fresh spinach. Looking forward to being able to buy fresh onions from the market again soon.

Make sure to check back if your favorite greens aren’t available when you shop. Sometimes I get the newsletter out before the farmer has updated the inventory.

Enjoy shopping this week and see you Saturday!

SEE CLICKABLE MAP ABOVE!

New veggies from Rocky Glade Farm….This week we have a few new things…collard greens, shunkyo radishes, rosy rapa mild mustard greens, parsley, chard, and bok choi in addition to our regular lettuce and spinach.

Frontier Family Farms continues to provide us with top-notch greens and broccoli!

Dogwood Valley has new additions as well. Spring is in the air!

Jeff at Farrar Farm sends this news:

“We are happy to announce a new addition to the Farrar Farm family. Samuel Freeman Farrar was born on February 3. Amy and Sam are both doing great. While preparing for and getting adjusted to Sam’s arrival, we fell a little behind in our processing and need to take a break from the Market for a few weeks. We will be back in the Spring with an expanded selection of local, all-natural beef from Farrar Farm. Thanks so much for all your support since we joined the Market and we look forward to being back real soon.”

ALSO Stones River Market has gift certificates listed! What an incredible gift to share with someone…. as a housewarming, a new friend, Mother or
Fathers day or just to something wonderful to share with someone who doesn’t quite understand “buying and supporting local” or whole foods eating.

Again, we thank you for the support of this market and the growers/makers who rely on you for their livelihood. What an incredible community this market truly is!
See you Wednesday,

Plattsburgh Online Ordering:  Online farmers market open for orders

Wow – what a nice day! We’re due for some nice ones, and I enjoyed today.

The online winter farmers market is now open for orders, through Tuesday evening.

Lots of good stuff! The season is changing – I moved the first tomato plants out into the slightly heated nursery in the hoophouse today.

We all thank you for your business.
