ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Reminder

Hey Everyone!

Don’t forget to place your orders on the market before noon, and to sign up to be a volunteer for this weekend.

Old99Farm Market:  OLd 99 FArm, week of June 21 2017

Writing this on Wed 21, the solstice. wow, already at the longest day of the year.

Thanks to the haying helpers, a big thanks, you know who you are!

Big request to you all to eat eggs and give them to friends and neighbours. I’ll help with a special offer: buy 3 dozen, get fourth free. That’s right, four for three. Devilled eggs, egg salads, quiches, etc.

Now is the season for meats from Old99, pork, beef, lamb all good for the bbq or oven.

Healthy eating,
Ian and Cami,

btw, see my facebook for great video on communicating climate change: Suzanne Moser. Intro says Safeguarding what we know, what we have, what is familiar and treasured in the face of climate change is and will be an increasingly difficult task. For many aspects of modern life, for human communities most at risk from climate change impacts and for countless species and ecosystems the task at hand is nothing short of heroic, and over time it may be “hospice work.” Those charged with protecting and helping natural and human communities and systems adapt are increasingly aware of this challenge (and need support in this task), as do those already well aware of the risks of climate change. Many others don’t know yet, and many don’t want to find out. How do we engage them? How do we communicate with them about climate risks and possible solutions, even if those solutions are imperfect? How do we sustain their engagement for the long haul? The presentation will offer insights into effective communication of climate change impacts and adaptation, with particular emphasis on the psychological dimensions that underlie people’s responses and that can help or hinder their constructive and sustained engagement in preparing for the future."

The Cumming Harvest - Closed:  This Week at The Cumming Harvest

This Week

TODAY is the first official day of Summer! Looks like it’ll be a beautiful start to it too, weather-wise. The days won’t get too hot, and we’ll be getting plenty of rain. The summer veggies love this weather and even the leafy greens are able to keep on producing.

THANK A FARMER! Every week, as we greet farmers for their deliveries we are interested to hear their interesting farm stories. Mike’s Melody Garden tells us about the dear that love to visit his garden, he’s not too happy about them and is in a constant battle to encourage them away from laying in his corn stalks. Weedy Soil Farm has stories about her farm cat and how she loves to cuddle and how growing under a hoop house is going. These two are just examples of conversations we have and how easy it is for us to know how all these farmers we work with LOVE what they do! The work is hard and frustrating but it is very rewarding and we are able to benefit, THANKS TO THEM! Feel free to email the farmers to thank them for what they do for us and encourage them to continue. I know they would say THANK YOU to you as well because they couldn’t continue without your support.

Carrell Farms & Buffalo Gal will deliver July 8th. You can place orders for them and pre-pay each week. http://www.carrellfarms.com/

Indian Creek Angus will deliver on July 1st. You can place orders for them online, then pick up on July 1st. All orders will be prepaid either online or at pick up. http://www.indiancreekangus.com/

New Field Farm's Online Market:  Cucumbers and more

Greetings,

We’re adding a few new items this week, including cucumbers. We have two varieties in the hoophouse that produced their first flush of fruit in the last few days. Some of the vines are almost six feet tall already and it was quite a sight to see all the cucumbers hanging in the air. Both plant and fruit seem to grow by the minute, especially in the heat. I’ve picked them all and put them in the cooler for this week’s market.

We also have chard, arugula, and parsley, in addition to the salad mix, lettuce, and basil.

The Sakura cherry tomatoes are producing more, while new eggplant are developing slowly so there’s none on offer this week.

To all those in school, teachers and students, congratulations on the end of another year!

Enjoy,
Tim
